For not quite 11 days online, the pageviews far exceeded my expectations. I expected to get maybe a couple hundred looks, by my friends and a few of their friends, but that was about it. Not so. The site did get looked at by more than my friends and the posts did get some encouraging notice from around the globe. I also did not expect to earn even a penny from advertising since I did not have many pageviews. I got my penny and a few more. At the rate I am going, my grandchildren should get a cheque.
I learned a lot about using social media, a lot about how much I don't know about social media, and how horribly ignorant I am about SEO. I also learned about monetizing using more than just ads.
Traffic: 2,257 pageviews
The pageviews definitely followed new postings and tutorials. That lovely blip was a post that was well received in the narrow sphere in which I was able to get some attention. Outside of direct traffic, the use of social sites to show my work and to try to get some sharing going was the only real source of traffic. I certainly did not expect to total over 2,000 pageviews in under 11 days, nor did I expect to have so many visitors looking around the site. The numbers are quite surprising given how new the site is and how little I know about web marketing.
Creating a facebook page and pinterest account, and joining reddit and ravelry were the social media avenues I explored and I have found out I am a pretty much clueless about how to use them effectively. This has been and will continue to be a learning process. I did do a snoopy-style happy dance though, when I saw I got a few organic traffic hits. This came as a complete shock given how my SEO and meta tag inputs were just sort of slammed in as an afterthought because I don't quite get it yet. I expected a big fat 0 in this area so was quite thrilled that anybody at all found one of my postings through a google search.
Net Income: $ -62.08
So this is a bit silly but for the sake of future consistency, I am posting my income and expenses. I am hoping that one day I will look back on this and smile at how teeny the income is. I used Amazon Associates for product links within tutorials and Google Adsense for general advertising. I have included ShareASale in this because I did post some affiliate ads a couple of days prior to the end of the month. Nothing came of them but I am still waiting for approval on most of the merchants I applied to.
This is only a little less silly than the net earnings but again, I am going for future consistency. I did have 1 popular (for me) post for a crochet tutorial and through this, recognized the importance of a decent picture. Bad pictures or no pictures translates to disinterest. The second post that got some interest was a 'list' post for sewing and the third was a seasonal craft project tutorial. You can tell by the numbers associated with the dates that I was getting better at marketing my posts as I went along.
I have lots of goals for November and I hope I am not taking on more than I can handle. I want to post 4-5 projects this month, and increase the content in general by I don't know how much. As far as traffic goes, I wish to increase my pageviews (obviously) and lower the bounce rate a bit. My goals are a tad lofty for pageviews but I intend to expand my traffic sources and post some good projects. I also want to see an increase in revenue but this is directly related to exposure. I am well aware that I will be spending more money to meet my project goals so actually earning money is not going to happen. One day, the income and expenses will balance out!
Plan to Increase Traffic
Figure out how to use Pinterest. Learn about SEO and meta tags. Post good stuff with good pictures and promote on social media.
Plan to Increase Income
Increase pageviews to increase advertising revenue. Continue to deep link in tutorials. Place ShareASale affiliates in appropriate pages. Apply to Commission Junction. Rob an armored truck. No, scratch that. I don't have time to plan it properly this month.
